why do we build our websites with the wordpress cms?
Occasionally, a potential client will want a site that’s entirely original, built from the ground up. Their reasoning is that they want a site that's entirely unique and original looking, rather than a cookie cutter template-based website. The motive is entirely understandable.
However, this sort of originality comes at a cost: if you build your site by hand, then you’re probably going to have to update it by hand. As a result, hand-built sites tend to stagnate, with no content being updated or added, as it's just too difficult to do so, and too easy to break.
That's why we design and develop 100% of our websites in one of the most flexible and easy-to-use content management systems (CMS) around: WordPress.
what's a cms? And what is the advantage of using one?
A CMS is one of the easiest and most effective ways to build content-rich websites. In addition to included functionality, developers around the world create a variety of themes, site builders, plugins, and other add-ons that make it possible to create a website that has a wealth of features, but is still easy to update and use.
But websites are only a piece of the CMS puzzle. Notice that words like “web” or “website” are nowhere in the acronym. That’s because CMS platforms focus on what is the keystone in any modern Internet marketing campaign—not the website itself, but the content featured on the website.
The majority of website content is written, in the form of product descriptions, informational pages, blog posts, and so on. A big part of the reason for this is that written content is absolutely necessary for SEO purposes—it’s a lot easier for Google’s spiders to comprehend what you’ve written, as opposed to what’s in a picture or graphic. But content also includes images, audio files, videos, and so on.
CMS platforms make it a cinch to add and update written content, upload photos and videos, and arrange all of it into a compelling website. A CMS page builder is basically a stripped down word processing application, making it easy to format text, insert images, add links, embed YouTube videos, and much more, just like you can in Microsoft Word.
we're a wordpress developer because no other cms comes close to wp's ease of use.
We've been developing websites for many, many years, across a variety of platforms. For a number of years, Joomla was our CMS of choice, because it was the first full-featured CMS that was powerful enough for professional-level website development, while also being reasonably accessible to business owners. The ability to customize just about anything made Joomla beloved in the developer community.
However, Joomla still had its shortcomings, such as a clunky, confusing user interface. But the bigger issue was that it was geared more towards developers than laypeople. Many business owners still needed outside assistance with basic site maintenance. While many of our clients choose to work with us long-term, we take pride in giving our customers that choice by creating websites that are simple and easy to use. We don't want our client to be obliged to retain our services.
That's why we ultimately made the choice to make the jump to WordPress. While it was originally created as a basic entry level blogging system, the massive community supporting the WordPress system helped it grow into a full-blown CMS that strikes an almost perfect balance between the needs of web developers and end users. That's why WordPress now has 60% of the CMS market share, with Joomla a distant second with 6.7%.
While we'll always keep an eye on the marketplace, and will be happy to adopt a better CMS if it better supports the needs of our customers, for now WordPress continues to be the best solution for both ourselves and clients.
are there any website security concerns when using an open-source cms like wordpress?
WordPress is open-source, which means that it's a community-developed software platform that is free to use and modify. Since there’s no central company driving the development of the system, people often believe that it’s more likely to be poorly secured and prone to hacking. This isn't the case.
WordPress' community developers are industry professionals who work tirelessly to improve the security, usability, adaptability of the platform. In addition, WP's popularity makes it more secure, because millions of people—developers and business owners—have a vested interest in the platform's continued security.
So, instead of a small team of developers coding a site from scratch while laboring under budget and time constraints, or a niche CMS like Drupal or Magento that doesn't have as many contributors keeping it up to date, you have a website built on a platform maintained by countless developers, all working to make their chosen CMS platform as perfect as possible.
That's why we we place our trust in WordPress.
