River Bend Medical Associates is a Sacramento medical practice that provides a variety of healthcare services to South Land Park and West Sacramento residents.

When River Bend came to us for web design services, their existing website was so terribly out of date and cumbersome to use that they simply didn’t use it or refer any of their patients to it. But they knew that having a well-designed, functional website could be of enormous benefit to their patients.
Additionally, as a healthcare provider they had a mandate to have a certain percentage of their clientele use their online portal to access health information, make appointments, and directly contact their healthcare providers. So it was imperative to promote the availability of these online services on the new website in order to encourage clients to use them.

As the project progressed, we came to realize that we weren’t just replacing a single site. In fact, we needed to roll the features and content of a second website they owned–which provided general information on health and wellness, as well as an health products e-commerce store–into the new site. Once we became aware of this issue, we worked with the River Bend team to move all of this content and the e-commerce store into the new project. The e-commerce section of the site required the investment of a significant amount of time. Our developers transferred all of the existing WooCommerce data to the new website, and then had to carefully check that all of the settings for shipping and products details on the new site were identical to those on the old site.
Another major challenge that arose was reorganizing their old blog posts. They weren’t sure how to approach this, so we spent a some time assisting them in how to distribute content throughout the site. During this process, we recognized the need to fill some content gaps. We put together a number of content suggestions, which they in turn used as inspiration for a number of new content pieces, which our in-house writer edited and polished.

Too often, businesses invest significant resources into a new website, only to discover after the fact that they don’t know how to use or update the website. As a consequence, the site quickly grows stale and no longer reflects the current status or identity of the business.
This wasn’t an option for River Bend, as the website would provide critical services for their patients. River Bend requested that we put together training and problem solving videos that present and future members of their practice could use to learn how to navigate and update the website. Our project manager created these videos and embedded them in the back end of the site. Shortly after launch, they asked for an additional training video, which we were able to provide them with as well.
They also wanted to be able to really drill down into how their patients and new site visitors used the website, so we set up Google Analytics, and also implemented HotJar heatmaps on the most important pages of the website.
the website launch, and beyond.
This project was very challenging, in part because doctors are, by nature, extremely busy people. However, we were able to successfully incorporate all of their desired features, and launched the website in mid-January. In early February, two of their employees came to our office for on-site training on how to use the website, and we will be providing them with an additional in-person training session in early March.
In the brief interval since the website launched, the River Bend team has been very pleased with the website and how it performed.
