Founded in 2006, Vivo is an IT staffing and consulting company based in Pleasanton, California. In conjunction with its 10th anniversary, Vivo contacted us seeking assistance in updating their web presence.
“We are super excited to unveil our new website!”
Out With The Old Website, In With The New
As their 10th anniversary approached, Vivo knew that it was time to make a significant change to their online image.
Vivo contacted us with an outline for their basic goals for the new site:
- Make the site more visually appealing.
- Improve the user experience.
- Better serve the needs of our customers.
- Incorporate mobile-friendly, responsive web design.
- Ensure that the design reflects the company’s new branding guidelines and messaging.
These are typical goals for businesses that contact us. In order to create sites that truly benefit our clients, we like to drill down a bit and find one or two core goals that really define the needs of the project. In looking at this project, it quickly became evident that Vivo’s identity needed to be put front and center.
Getting On Message
While their existing site covered the basics as far as communicating what services they offered, it didn’t do anything to communicate who they were. They were a quirky, fun-loving company with a staid, conservative website.
Given that business to business relationships are built upon the development of a mutual understanding, Vivo needed a site that would accurately communicate the company’s mindset and message. Going into the design process, we kept that need in the forefront of our minds.
The Challenges of Designing the New Vivo Website
The first major challenge of the project was that we weren’t starting from scratch. We came into the design process after Vivo had already begun to collaborate with a previous design company. So we started off by conferring with Vivo about the details of the design process, and then picked up where the old designers left off.
The previous designer had recommended that the consultant and clients sections be entirely separated, essentially creating external and internal websites. Secondly, they had placed a video on the homepage that significantly complicated site navigation.
We came in and streamlined the site structure–with a small password-protection section of the site for internal use–and made better SEO choices for the design and content of the homepage.
The second major challenge also involved working with external resources. Vivo had started using a job system run by a company called Haley Marketing. We worked with Haley Marketing to provide them with the web code they needed to allow us to integrate their job system into the new site and make it work seamlessly. While this collaboration process took a little work, we managed to get the system up and running without too much difficulty.
We Don’t Just Design. We Write Content Too!
In addition to web design and development, we also provided copywriting services as well, as the structure of the site and the services being described changed drastically in the new site, necessitating the development of a great deal of new content.
Vivo was actually unsure as to whether they trusted an outside company to handle writing content, so our copywriter wrote up and sent over a sample page. Shortly thereafter, Vivo gave us the greenlight to handle writing all of their new site content.
Provided with a brief description of each service category that Vivo wanted the site to cover, our copywriter did his own original research and drew from the existing site content to flesh out service pages, which were then sent over to Vivo for review. This process turned out to be nearly painless, as only a handful of minor changes were made, allowing us to finish and launch the site more quickly than we had anticipated (always a pleasant surprise!).
Vivo’s reception of the finished product was glowing. In fact, they commissioned us shortly after the site launched to design and write a page celebrating Vivo’s 10th anniversary and summarizing their accomplishments to date. Shortly thereafter, Vivo’s CEO wrote a brief blog post announcing the launch of the new website, saying, “We are super excited to unveil our new website! Ever the cobbler’s kids that we are, Vivoers finally got around to taking care of our own technology needs.”
Overall, working with the staff at Vivo was a huge pleasure. They are a great group of kind, funny, hardworking people, and it was easy to see why their business has been enjoying consistent success and growth since their launch back in 2006.
It definitely put a smile on our faces to finally give the cobbler’s kids the new set of shoes they needed and deserved.
