RIZKNOWS describes their team as “The Go-To-Guys for Deals and Reviews,” while their website featuring deals, discounts, written reviews, and buyer guides. RIZKNOWS originally made their mark with their popular YouTube channel, which features reviews of technology and fitness products.
The expanded RIZKNOWS website needed to feel like a true complement to the YouTube channel, capturing the feel and character of the RIZKNOWS team.
Sometimes, the true test of a web development team is how they perform when time is limited.
Back in 2016, RIZKNOWS approached us because they desperately needed a new website, and quickly. They had been using a Wix-based website that did the bare basics for featuring discounted products. However, they were unhappy with the look of the site, as well as its clunky e-commerce interface, and were ready to step up their game.
The challenge was, they wanted the website up in time for Black Friday, the biggest shopping day of the year. This left us precious little time, and so we suggested focusing on the core feature of the site: the deals. Our developers worked closely with the RIZKNOWS team to get the look they wanted and to implement a variety of features, including:
- Improving navigation and designing the UI to encourage users to check out product “SHOP NOW” links.
- Creating a system allowing site administrators to schedule product deals so that they appeared at a set time, and then expired and were removed from the site without any intervention. This allowed them to work during normal business hours, rather than having to add and remove deals in the middle of the night.
- Implementing customized price fields that could feature any text the admins desired, such as “30% off!”
- Creating customization options where admins could mark a deal as “featured” and display a fire icon, or mark a deal as “Big Time Deal” so that it automatically showed up at the top of the homepage.
- Instituting a randomization feature that would reshuffle the order of deals every 5 to 15 minutes.
- Created a pop-up headers and other attention-grabbing features to encourage signing up for their newsletter.
It was a mad scrabble to get the site launched on time, and we did it. The site performed admirably during the holiday sales season, and pulled in a lot of business (and newsletter signups, of course).
But once things had calmed down and 2017 rolled around, it was time to create the site that we and RIZKNOWS had really wanted to build.
The great thing about WordPress is that you can significantly upgrade a website without having to start from scratch.
The goal for the expansion of the RIZKNOWS site was to bring original content to the site, in the form of product reviews, buyer guides, and a blog feed. Now, the trick with a website that will publish new content on an ongoing basis is that it’s one thing if the original developers manage the website, and another thing entirely if the client will manage the site.
In the latter case, in addition to creating an attractive design for each content type, you have to develop a system that makes it as easy and convenient as possible for business owners and employees to create and publish content.
Our designer and developers worked closely with RIZKNOWS to get the content page designs just right, cultivated a clean, modern, sleek design. In addition, we advised them as to how the site and its content could be effectively organized to produce the best possible user experience.
Website collaboration requires website coordination.
One of the biggest challenges we faced on the RIZKNOWS site is that there were a large number of moving parts. Several different teams–representing both Post Modern Marketing and RIZKNOWS–were involved in the development process. The design was being tweaked, developers were making changes, the RIZKNOWS team was adding and editing content, app developers were working on the back end to integrate a new mobile application into the site, and so on.
A single development site simply wouldn’t suffice, as it would be all too easy for one person to overwrite the work of another, potentially destroying hours or even days of work. We were able to avoid this issue by using WP Engine–our favored WordPress host–to spin up multiple sites for testing purposes, with one specifically for the use of the app developers, Fullstack Labs.
Once everything was sorted out, a single production site was created. At launch, we coordinated with Fullstack to ensure that the API endpoints were all properly updated, and that everything synced perfectly.
It really was a challenging development and coordination process, but we and RIZKNOWS both agreed that the final product justified the effort. After the site launch, the RIZKNOWS team met with our CMO, Josh Rubin, to consult about site SEO strategies, and there may be future opportunities for Post Modern Marketing to bolster the success of RIZKNOWS.
It was a pleasure to work with them, and we hope to do so again in the future!
